Elementary school
Elementary School includes students in grades two through five. The program is designed to implement a philosophy valuing a supportive, yet challenging environment, balanced with attention to individual needs and emphasizing academic excellence. The program is built on components that address the intellectual, aesthetic, emotional, physical, and social development needs of the students.
This philosophy is implemented through an integrated curriculum following Common Core standards containing language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, visual art, physical education, character education and music where students are engaged in a varied and challenging daily program within a structured set of expectations for behavior, achievement and participation.
Faculty members design classroom environments that allow purposeful movement and interaction. Most teaching is accomplished in small-group settings as the teachers present the curriculum in a differentiated manner catered for by small group sizes.
The library and technology resources provide appropriate hardware and software that support instruction. The curriculum is language-centered with reading and writing skills presented in a developmentally appropriate manner.
Math is presented through conceptual and manipulative lessons supplemented with K-5 math teacher resources.
Students have access to fully equipped science labs on campus.
Using the curriculum outline as a roadmap, activities, writings, and readings are selected to enhance the sciences, social studies, and language arts. The goal of this approach is to develop a strong foundation by developing skills, concepts, and higher level thinking processes. In addition, the teachers present homework challenges daily. These are designed to enhance understanding but more importantly are used to develop developmentally appropriate study skills. The development of these skills is viewed as critical to future student success. The program also values student’s opportunity to participate in programs designed to expand exceptional skill or interest in the arts, academics, and athletics.
Students are encouraged to participate in varied experiences whether they are offered by the school or by the wider community. Participation in these activities is accommodated and is formally recognized through participating in the school community service. Student progress is monitored through teachers’ observations, and formative/summative assessments.
Students are assessed continuously in all subjects throughout the academic year. Trimester grades are based on multiple assessments. Percentages are used when calculating grades. They are then converted to appropriate letter grades.
Assessments can include, but are not limited to, tests and quizzes, written essays or reports, presentations, video or performance pieces, models or art pieces, debates or students teaching their peers within a topic.
Teachers maintain collaborative notes on the emotional, social, and academic growth of students. Such formal notes/observations are written and used as the points of discussion for parent conferences 3 times a year. At the end of each trimester, narrative and cumulative progress reports are prepared.

Developing an international-minded culture at HSE not only promotes the school’s mission and vision but also enables our students to engage with the worldwide community, learn from others, and evolve as global citizens.
Students in the Elementary stage grow to respect and tolerate others by acknowledging their peers’ views and opinions and sharing their own thoughts and emotions. Students learn to be empathic and open-minded by incorporating others into their activities and treating people with decency and compassion, even if they speak a different language or come from a different cultural background. They also exhibit international mindedness by acting with integrity, such as by making new students feel welcome and actively sharing cultural traditions, tales, and beliefs.

An internationally minded student is an assertive student who can contribute to decision-making while knowing how their actions affect others and respecting other people’s views, feelings, and viewpoints. This starts with Elementary students, who have the option to participate in decision-making processes by joining the Students’ Council, where they discuss, plan, and implement initiatives that benefit their school community.
Importance of Skill Development Curriculum in HSE
HSE education and skill development are combined to equip students for the challenges and expectations of today’s demanding environment. Skill development benefits students in various ways. It gives them the confidence to participate in joint initiatives. Students develop the ability to make their own judgements and comprehend how those actions might have consequences; they also learn to deal with challenges and situations on their own.
Skill development inspires students to strategize for their futures and assists them become independent thinkers. As well as enabling students to explore and acquire knowledge outside of their textbooks. It also allows students to think independently and make decisions at an early age.
